Catania agricultural crime wave

Overview

In late July 2026, agricultural producers in Sicily’s Catania plain reported a sharp increase in coordinated thefts of crops, tractors and other farm equipment. Criminal groups operated in teams, concealing their faces and gloves, and several incidents were captured on security cameras and investigated by Carabinieri. A week later, a Catania anti‑mafia court ordered the preventive seizure of assets belonging to two individuals convicted of aggravated extortion using mafia methods. The seizure stemmed from an investigation that uncovered a scheme using fictitious corporate shares to fraudulently obtain public agricultural subsidies from the national agency. Bank accounts and a related farming company were frozen, signalling a law‑enforcement response to the broader pattern of organized crime targeting the agricultural sector in the region.
