Catholic Church social doctrine and formation reforms

The Catholic Church is implementing various internal reforms and training initiatives focused on social doctrine, episcopal selection, and pastoral formation.

In late September 2026, developments were noted regarding the selection of bishops. Following directives from Pope Leo XIV, reports suggested that apostolic nuncios should adopt a more “synodal and missionary profile,” which would influence the qualities sought in future episcopal candidates by modifying the consultative process.

Simultaneously, the Church has introduced new training programs for the 2026-2027 period. In Catania, Italy, the Archdiocese announced the “Leone XIV” Forum of Social Doctrine to address contemporary social shifts using the encyclical “Magnifica Humanitas.”

Further educational initiatives have been established in the Diocese of Cuneo-Fossano, focusing on clerical formation, pastoral councils, and lay associations. These programs include spiritual retreats and institutional updates, with a specific training path regarding abuse and recognition processes scheduled for December 2026 for priests, laity, and educators.
