Challenger Gold Hualilán project development
Overview
Challenger Gold has initiated a 35,000-metre diamond drilling program at the Hualilán gold deposit in Argentina’s San Juan Province. The campaign, involving four drilling rigs and supported by local contractors Eco Minera S.A. and Perforaciones Iglesianas S.R.L., includes 5,000 metres of geotechnical drilling. The program aims to expand known mineralization and convert resources within the open-pit design, targeting an estimated 2.8 million ounces of gold equivalent contained in 60.6 million tonnes of ore.
The company is transitioning its strategy from a third-party toll treatment model to an integrated mining and processing operation, supported by an A$85 million equity raise. A Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) indicates a projected 14.25-year mine life with a production target of 1.84 million ounces of gold equivalent. At a gold price of US$3,500/oz, the study projected a pre-tax net present value (NPV5) of US$1.45 billion. The proposed development features a staged approach: an initial heap-leach stage followed by the addition of a flotation circuit approximately two years later.
To support an accelerated roadmap targeting standalone production in early 2029, Challenger Gold is bringing forward expenditure on engineering and early earthworks, such as access roads and a mining camp. BBA Consultants has commenced detailed engineering for Phase 1. To manage this growth, the company has appointed new leadership, including Non-Executive Chairman Peter Marrone, COO Yohann Bouchard, CFO Felipe Riquelme, and VP of Project and Strategic Planning Luke Buchanan.
