Chamarajanagar forest encounter controversy

A fatal encounter involving forest department personnel in the Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka has led to political and community demands for accountability. The incident, which occurred in the Chikkalluru Reserved Forest area of Hanur taluk, resulted in the deaths of three individuals identified as Anthony Swami, John Rose Peter, and Anthony Kumar.

Political leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have criticized the Karnataka government, alleging that the deaths were “murders in the name of an encounter.” The BJP has called for a formal statement from the Chief Minister and Forest Minister regarding the circumstances of the operation.

Simultaneously, Christian community leaders, including Archbishop Dr. Peter Machado, are demanding an independent judicial inquiry conducted by a High Court or Supreme Court judge. While the forest department maintains that the use of force was necessary, community representatives have questioned whether there was a genuine threat to staff. An FIR has been registered as a murder case at the Hanur police station, though no specific personnel have been named as accused. Leaders are also seeking compensation and government employment for the families of the deceased.
