Chedraui labor disputes in Mexico

Overview

Employees of the Chedraui supermarket chain in several Mexican states, including Baja California, Mexico City, Estado de México, Veracruz, Quintana Roo, and Aguascalientes, initiated labor strikes to protest significant Income Tax (ISR) deductions. Workers alleged that withholdings sometimes exceeded half of their weekly pay, particularly after the company transitioned from biweekly to weekly pay cycles. Protesters demanded the return of withheld funds, fair wages, and a return to biweekly payments.

Chedraui explained that the variations occurred because five pay weeks accumulated within a single calendar month, causing total monthly income to exceed the legal limit for certain employment subsidies. The company stated this necessitated a year-end ISR calculation rather than an additional deduction. To address the situation, Chedraui authorized a one-time extraordinary cash payment for affected staff and promised system adjustments to prevent future occurrences.
