Chega party incident at RUC radio studio

Overview

On October 12, approximately 30 members of the Chega party, including deputies Rita Matias and Madalena Cordeiro, entered the Rádio Universidade de Coimbra (RUC) studios in Coimbra, Portugal. The group interrupted a live political debate at the Associação Académica de Coimbra (AAC) headquarters, an institution that had previously voted to prohibit Chega members from its buildings. The incident led to the cessation of the broadcast and a surge of insults and threats against the station, prompting RUC to temporarily disable its phone lines. While Chega disputed the narrative, claiming discriminatory treatment regarding debate participation, the Journalists' Union characterized the event as a “hostile act” and a crime against democracy.

Following the incident, the AAC filed a complaint with the Ombudsman and submitted a criminal complaint to the Coimbra Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DIAP). The complaint cites crimes such as unauthorized entry into restricted areas and attacks against the freedom of programming and information. Additionally, the Entidade Reguladora para a Comunicação Social (ERC) has unanimously decided to launch an investigation into the matter.
