Chemical-based robberies in Quito

Quito is experiencing a significant rise in robberies involving the use of chemical substances to incapacitate victims. Between January 1 and August 31, 2026, the capital recorded 742 reports of robberies via incapacitation, representing a 28.6% increase compared to the 577 cases reported during the same period in 2025.

The Eugenio Espejo district is the most affected area, accounting for approximately half of the total reports in the city. Other notable areas include Quitumbe, Eloy Alfaro, and La Delicia. Authorities have noted that while scopolamine is frequently suspected, the crimes also involve alcohol combined with psychotropic substances or other sedatives.

This trend is also linked to involuntary disappearances. Data from the Interior Ministry indicates that Ecuador recorded 60 involuntary disappearances associated with the alleged use of scopolamine between January and July. Victims are often found disoriented in locations far from where they were last seen, frequently having suffered financial theft through unauthorized bank transfers and withdrawals.
