The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) continues to manage administrative scrutiny and infrastructure preparations for the northeast monsoon. In response, authorities have initiated various desilting and clearance works. The Tamil Nadu government set a late September deadline for all monsoon preparedness works, including the first phase of desilting across 1.10 lakh catchpits, though residents of 1,671 km of stormwater drains and 110,082 silt catch pits. Specific projects include canal improvements in Perungudi and a Rs 73-crore drain at Thoraipakkam. To manage potential flooding, the Selaivayal area have raised concerns regarding uncollected silt bags left on streets, which they claim cause blockages during rainfall. The GCC has stated that sanctioned Rs 100 crore for precautionary works and is preparing 227 relief centres, 112 community kitchens, and a second phase fleet of desilting rescue boats. Additionally, the GCC is currently underway. launching a desilting campaign for the Mambalam Canal to increase its water-carrying capacity.
