Chiayi High Speed Rail connectivity disputes

The development of a light rail link connecting the Chiayi High Speed Rail station to the city center remains a point of political and infrastructural contention.

Initial disputes centered on stalled progress despite a central government pledge of NT$372 billion in funding. Local political figures, including Mayor-candidate Zhang Qikai and legislators from various parties, have pressured the executive branch to release promised funds, citing the project's importance for regional development, tourism, and tech parks. Meanwhile, legislative shifts regarding the project's funding and alternative solutions have added to the political friction.

As the situation progressed, calls for the rail link continued, with political figures urging President Lai Ching-te and the central government to expedite approval. Advocates argue that the connection is a necessary prerequisite for integrating Chiayi into the "Greater Southern Silicon Valley" development plan and addressing regional imbalances in talent and industry distribution. Amidst these infrastructure debates, Chiayi City has also received various awards for other human-centric transportation and road improvement projects.
