The Unión Ganadera Regional de Chihuahua (UGRCH) announced plans to resume cattle exports to the United States, beginning with an initial shipment of 825 head scheduled for late September. To manage early quotas, the UGRCH implemented a lottery system to determine export turns, noting that 65,000 head had already been registered via the VacaNet platform. Following discussions between the UGRCH president and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, the Santa Teresa, New Mexico, and San Jerónimo, Chihuahua, border crossing officially reopened for livestock transit. This reopening follows a period of restrictions caused by a sanitary emergency involving the screwworm. U.S. Secretary Rollins announced the reactivation of the San Jerónimo-Santa Teresa crossing for September 24, noting its importance as a critical hub that has handled approximately 43% of Mexican cattle imports to the U.S. over the last five years. The resumption will follow a phased approach. During the first week, the flow is expected to be about 800 head per day, eventually scaling up to 1,500 daily animals by the fourth week. To ensure sanitary safety, authorities have implemented reinforced protocols, including the use of screwworm-detecting dogs, radiofrequency readers for electronic ear tag identification, and upgraded inspection facilities. Despite a recent confirmed case of screwworm in a horse in New Mexico, officials maintain that the reopening schedule remains unchanged. Chihuahua’s Secretary of Rural Development, Mauro Parada Muñoz, emphasized the importance of maintaining strict sanitary protocols and documentation to prevent future closures. While Santa Teresa is the first crossing to resume operations, authorities are planning to reopen the Palomas–Columbus crossing within 30 days.
