A 48-year-old father from Nagoya was reprimanded by police after leaving his 7-year-old son alone on Mount Fuji during an ascent. The incident occurred on the Fujinomiya Trail near the sixth station, at an altitude of approximately 2,500 meters, after the child expressed exhaustion. The father reportedly told the boy to “wait here” and continued toward the summit with his older son. The child was later discovered by mountain hut workers sitting alone on a bench with only snacks and a soft drink, amidst foggy and rainy conditions. Reports indicate the boy was left alone for approximately eight hours. Shizuoka police located the father near the eighth station, roughly three hours away from the child. Officers ordered the man to abandon his climb and return to the child. The boy was unharmed and reunited with his family. The father apologized for his “thoughtless,” “rash,” and “precipitous” decision. Authorities used the incident to issue a stern warning, stating, “Even if it means having to give up on climbing the mountain together, leaving a child behind is unacceptable.” Mount Fuji attracts approximately 200,000 climbers annually and has seen several recent climbing-related incidents and rescues.
