Child and group rescues in Yaoundé
Overview
In early September 2026, authorities in Yaoundé, Cameroon, conducted a series of operations to rescue individuals held in suspicious residential settings.
On September 3, police responded to an anonymous tip in the Essos neighborhood, rescuing 18 children aged between 18 months and 20 years from a residence described by neighbors as having been transformed into a “fortress” over two years. The Ministry of Social Affairs initiated psychosocial care for the minors, and several suspects were taken into custody.
On September 6, a second operation occurred in the Ngousso neighborhood, where 20 people—including 10 women, 8 men, and two children—were found in an unsanitary earthen basement. This site was being used as a place of worship for a group called ‘Mercy of God Ministries’.
Following these incidents, local officials and investigators are examining whether there is a structural link between the Essos and Ngousso cases while conducting additional checks in areas such as Nkoabang and Mimboman.
