Child protection and welfare initiatives in Assam

Overview

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has emphasized the state’s commitment to child welfare and protection. Following a crackdown on child and forced marriage that resulted in over 11,000 arrests and an 81 per cent decline in such practices across 20 districts, the government announced plans for an “unapologetic campaign” in November to continue combating the issue.

In addition to marriage prevention, the state government has notified the State Child Protection Policy and Juvenile Justice Rules, 2026. These new measures aim to address regulatory gaps through mandatory screening for child safeguarding officers, streamlined operations for Child Welfare Committees and Juvenile Justice Boards, and the institutionalization of home audits and individual care plans to improve child safety.
