Childhood and Adolescent Cancer Awareness Month

September is observed as Childhood and Adolescent Cancer Awareness Month, an initiative aimed at increasing research funding, public knowledge, and support for families.

In the United States, organizations like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and CureSearch focus on pediatric oncology research and family services. St. Jude has reported increasing survival rates from 20% to over 80% since 1962, though many survivors face long-term health challenges. Global support is provided by networks such as Ronald McDonald House Charities.

On an international scale, the World Health Organization estimates that approximately 400,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer annually. In Greece, the Hellenic Society of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology is participating in ‘Golden September’ to promote early diagnosis and modern diagnostic methods. As the society approaches its 40th anniversary in 2026, its efforts focus on educating healthcare professionals and integrating international therapeutic strategies.

In the United States, the month was formally established via presidential declaration in 2012, with the gold ribbon serving as a symbol to represent the value of children. The American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) has noted that pediatric brain tumors present unique challenges because they are genetically distinct from adult tumors and often located in difficult-to-reach areas. Research supported by the ABTA has contributed to immunotherapy clinical trials and therapies receiving FDA Rare Pediatric Disease designation. However, experts note that the transition from preclinical research to patient treatment can take seven to fifteen years, making ongoing funding vital for specialized treatments.
