Childhood welfare and school safety in Spain

Overview

A study by the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS) highlighted historical and modern challenges for children in Spain. The survey found that 48.6% of respondents received physical punishment, such as slaps or blows, during childhood, while 49.1% reported being insulted or humiliated. Modern issues include internet-based harassment, with 26.3% of those aged 40 or younger reporting insults or threats via social media. Furthermore, a majority of Spaniards expressed distrust in school safety, with 63.3% believing educational institutions provide little assistance in bullying situations.

Subsequent data from the Confederación Autismo España and the Aragon region indicated specific vulnerabilities and rising mental health concerns. Research showed that 90% of students with autism have experienced school bullying, often through social exclusion. In Aragon, the number of protocols for suicidal ideation rose to 1,218 by the end of the 2025/26 academic year, up from 847 the previous year. The region also reported an increase in bullying protocols, alongside cases involving gender and sexual violence and the detection of youth gangs.
