Chile floods August 2026

Following the frontal system that struck central‑southern Chile in early August 2026, heavy rain and strong winds caused rivers to overflow, landslides and widespread power outages. Two residents were killed in Los Ríos when a fallen tree struck their vehicle, and more than 2,000 people were isolated. Over 180,000 households lost electricity and more than 1,000 homes were damaged.

Red alerts were issued for the Bío Bío, La Araucanía, Ñuble and Coquimbo regions, prompting evacuations in dozens of communes. The Chilean Army and Carabineros were deployed to secure evacuated neighborhoods and protect property, while the Ministry of Development activated the Ficha Básica de Emergencia in nine Biobío communes to catalogue damage. Dozens of residents were placed in temporary shelters, and animal‑rescue teams saved livestock in Talcahuano.

Local officials have asked the president to declare the Biobío region a disaster zone to mobilise additional resources. The government continues road‑clearing, aid distribution and river‑level monitoring as the national flood emergency remains in effect, with meteorologists warning that above‑average rainfall may persist in the coming months.
