In early July 2026, Chilean police seized over six kilograms of processed marijuana on Ruta 5 Sur near Chimbarongo and detained a driver in Punta Arenas after a field test indicated cannabis in his vehicle. The operation highlighted routine road checks targeting large marijuana shipments. Later in July, authorities expanded the crackdown, intercepting a vehicle on Route CH‑23 between Calama and San Pedro de Atacama that concealed liquid ketamine and additional marijuana. The same day, a separate traffic stop on Ruta 5 Sur near Chimbarongo uncovered a smaller marijuana cache and a large cash sum. These successive actions illustrate a broader effort by the Antinarcotics Brigade and Carabineros to disrupt diverse drug trafficking routes across Chile’s major highways. On 26 July, Carabineros again stopped a driver on Ruta 5 near Chimbarongo, this time finding 111 g of marijuana together with more than 10 million Chilean pesos. The seizure was part of a wider police campaign that also targeted vehicle theft, illegal ammunition and other offenses, underscoring the authorities’ multipronged approach to curb illicit activities on the nation’s main roads.
