Chile municipal crackdown on abandoned vehicles

In July 2026 Chilean municipalities intensified efforts to reclaim public space and improve safety. The municipality of Frutillar reported 110 abandoned vehicles, issuing stickers that prompted most owners to remove their cars, while 19 remained in a new municipal corral. In Antofagasta, joint inspections uncovered six unlicensed street‑side mechanical workshops and issued numerous citations, towing two abandoned cars to an impound lot under the 2017 ordinance banning such activities.

A week later, Copiapó’s crews replaced defective sidewalk paving stones after pedestrian injuries, and Rancagua removed an abandoned hopper that blocked a sidewalk and endangered pedestrians with reduced mobility. Officials highlighted cooperation with residents and the ongoing program to clear abandoned vehicles and restore safe, accessible public areas across multiple Chilean cities.
