Chile political scandal over Omegna video

In late July 2026, a video from a private birthday party showed Libertarian Party (PNL) adviser Ítalo Omegna making sexual jokes about minors and mocking children with autism. The clip quickly spread online, prompting condemnation from politicians, civil‑rights groups and autism organisations.

The initial fallout saw PNL deputy Hans Marowski accept Omegna’s resignation as his legislative adviser and remove him from the Instituto Mises Cono Sur. The party disavowed the remarks and opened disciplinary proceedings. Senator Karim Bianchi requested an investigation by the National Prosecutor into all participants for possible criminal liability.

By July 29, the scandal had broadened. Former minister Evelyn Matthei publicly denounced Omegna’s conduct and used the episode to criticize a right‑wing abortion proposal. Omegna apologized, reiterated his resignation, and said he would appear before prosecutors. Actress Cata Pulido, who initially defended Omegna, later retracted her support, describing the video as a political misstep.

The controversy intensified debate over ethical standards for public officials in Chile, with multiple parties demanding a response from PNL leader Johannes Kaiser and calling for accountability across the political spectrum.
