Chile salmon sector promotion and expansion

In early July the Chilean Salmon Council presented four regulatory proposals expected to lift salmon‑industry employment by up to 8%, potentially adding 1,800‑5,400 formal jobs in Los Lagos, Aysén and Magallanes. The measures were framed as a way to improve concession use and boost related supply‑chain businesses.

A few weeks later SalmonChile participated in the third Semana del Salmón 2026 in Puerto Montt, pairing the flagship export with gastronomy, heritage and tourism through tastings, cooking shows and cultural performances. Former Puerto Montt mayor Jaime Jelincic used the forum to call for a regional pact that would double salmon production in Magallanes within ten years, citing technological and environmental advances that could create jobs and stabilise the regional economy.

At the end of July the same Semana del Salmón attracted more than 10,000 visitors. Deputy Minister of Economy and Mining Daniel Mas highlighted the event’s role in regional development, while companies such as Multi X, Camanchaca and Marine Farm donated over a tonne of salmon and staged interactive stands. A cooking segment featured MasterChef winner Daniela Castro. Government officials, including Governor Alejandro Santana and the mayor of Puerto Montt, also attended.

The industry will honour long‑standing contributors at the Cena del Salmón gala on 10 September in Puerto Varas, a ceremony marking 50 years of commercial salmon farming in Chile and further underscoring the sector’s push for visibility, investment and job creation.
