Overview

In late June, Chile announced the completion of a project to remove hazardous chemicals from the port of Arica, signalling the end of a targeted cleanup operation at the coastal facility.

A month later, officials highlighted ongoing waste‑management challenges across the country. In Arica, the water utility Aguas del Altiplano extracted more than 12 tonnes of solid waste from the municipal sewer system between January and June, clearing blockages caused by oils, plastics, food scraps, wet wipes and construction debris. Simultaneously, the municipality of Punta Arenas instituted a one‑day suspension of household solid‑waste collection on 29 July to observe the national Day of the Waste Collector, urging residents to keep trash in external containers. These actions illustrate Chile’s broader effort to address both hazardous chemical removal at ports and routine municipal waste handling.
