Chilean agricultural pest control and border surveillance

Overview

Chile’s Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) has implemented various measures to protect the nation’s phytosanitary and zoosanitary heritage from pests and diseases.

Initially, SAG launched awareness campaigns at the Chacalluta Border Complex to prevent the illegal entry of high-risk agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, seeds, and meat, during a period of increased traveler volume toward Peru. Authorities emphasized that travelers must declare such items digitally under oath to allow for inspection.

Following these preventative efforts, SAG successfully concluded fruit fly eradication and intensive surveillance campaigns in northern regions. In the Antofagasta Region, the campaign against the Mediterranean fruit fly in Tocopilla was declared finished after three biological cycles without new detections. Similarly, in the Tarapacá Region, eradication efforts in the urban area of Pozo Almonte were completed, alongside surveillance in several other locations. SAG is now promoting a new national strategy to strengthen pest detection and management.
