Chilean driver substance abuse enforcement

Overview

Chilean authorities have intensified efforts to combat substance abuse among drivers following reports of high impairment levels. Initial data from the National Service for the Prevention and Rehabilitation of Drug and Alcohol Consumption (Senda) indicated that approximately 17% of public transport drivers tested positive for drugs or alcohol during testing of 146 bus drivers.

In response to these findings, regional officials began organizing intersectoral meetings to develop rehabilitation programs. Transport unions have advocated for the issue to be treated as a health matter requiring state and corporate assistance.

During the Fiestas Patrias holiday period, enforcement increased through programs such as ‘Tolerancia Cero’. Roadside inspections in regions including Temuco and Algarrobo led to several arrests, including drivers testing positive for cocaine and alcohol, as well as various traffic violations.
