Chilean electricity providers kite safety campaigns
Overview
Electricity distributors in Chile have launched safety initiatives to mitigate risks associated with kite flying during the Fiestas Patrias holidays.
CGE initiated a ‘Volantín Seguro’ (Safe Kite) campaign to prevent accidents involving electrical networks. This program includes educational activities in schools and advises residents to fly kites in open spaces away from high-voltage towers and power lines. The company also warned against using prohibited conductive threads.
Enel Distribución issued similar warnings, noting that between January 2024 and July 2026, over 1,300 instances of kites contacting electrical networks were recorded, alongside more than 6,000 reports of service interruptions. The most impacted areas include Maipú, Pudahuel, and La Florida. Authorities recommend using only cotton thread and avoiding nylon, metal, or aluminum foil in kite construction to prevent power outages and serious accidents.
