Chilean environmental and resource management initiatives
Overview
Chile has initiated several environmental and resource management strategies. The government implemented its first Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Water Resources (PACC-RH), which establishes 10 measures and 35 actions to bolster national water security. Led by the General Directorate of Water (DGA) with support from the Ministry of the Environment and the FAO, the plan seeks to balance human access, ecosystem protection, and resilience against droughts and floods. It specifically addresses disparities in rural water access and the high consumption rates of the agricultural and livestock sectors.
Simultaneously, efforts to manage biodiversity are underway through the Service of Biodiversity and Protected Areas (SBAP) and the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF). In the Valparaíso region, coordination efforts for the 2026-2027 Regional Operational Continuity Plan have reached 55% progress. This process aims to facilitate the transfer of administration for 110 protected areas—representing nearly a quarter of the national territory—to the SBAP by March 2027, involving the relocation of personnel, assets, and technical capacities.
