Chilean government communications restructuring

Overview

The administration of President José Antonio Kast has undergone a strategic restructuring of its communication functions. Gonzalo Arenas Hödar, a lawyer and historian, was appointed as the new Undersecretary of the General Secretariat of Government (Segegob) and official government spokesperson.

Arenas replaced José Francisco Lagos, who resigned from the position but remains a collaborator to the President. The reorganization, led by Interior and Segegob Biminister Claudio Alvarado and Presidential Communications Director Cristian Valenzuela, implements a new weekly information schedule including general briefings, sectoral interventions, and management balances.

In his initial capacity, Arenas addressed controversies regarding the Ministry of Justice’s decision to reduce sentences for certain sexual abuse convictions, noting the government’s obligation to follow Supreme Court doctrine. Additionally, Senate President Paulina Núñez met with Arenas to coordinate communication channels between the Executive and Congress regarding the legislative agenda.
