Chilean public library service developments
Overview
Municipalities in Chile are reporting progress in public library services and accessibility. In Copiapó, the Municipal Public Library is set to reopen its physical space on October 29 following earthquake-related displacement. The facility will offer over 3,000 titles and host various cultural events, including the ‘Week of the Depths’ organized by the Copiapó Municipal Symphony Orchestra.
In Puerto Varas, the local library network has recorded over 16,000 total visits. The Children’s Library specifically reached a milestone of 8,000 visits and 5,000 book loans within its first six months. This initiative is part of the Chilean Public Library Network through an agreement with the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage.
To expand access to isolated regions, the National Cultural Heritage Service (Serpat) has inaugurated Bibliomóvil mobile library services. In the Atacama region, these units serve schools and rural localities, such as San Pedro in Copiapó, to reduce territorial gaps. Additionally, a new 4x4 Bibliomóvil equipped with photovoltaic panels has been launched in Punta Arenas to serve the Magallanes Region. This unit is designed to navigate difficult terrain, such as snow and mud, to reach communities in Tierra del Fuego. The Magallanes project involved a state investment of 169 million pesos and includes a ‘traveling box’ initiative to lend book collections to local community groups.
