Chilean women's empowerment programs

Overview

The Chilean government has announced the termination of the Rural Women program, a long-standing partnership between the Institute of Agricultural Development (Indap) and the Fundación para el Desarrollo de la Mujer (Prodemu). Established in 1992, the initiative provided training in sectors such as horticulture, poultry, and beekeeping to approximately 35,000 women.

Officials cited administrative and financial inefficiencies as the reason for the closure, noting that 38.5% of the program’s $3.869 billion budget was consumed by administrative costs. While the program will continue to support current participants, it will no longer accept new applicants. Local leaders have criticized the decision, describing it as a “betrayal” of rural women who depend on the program for income and empowerment.

In a separate development regarding women's economic support, the ‘Mujeres Jefas de Hogar’ (Women Heads of Household) program in the Maule Region has seen approximately 700 women graduate from its training modules this year. This initiative, funded by SernamEG and local municipalities, focuses on vocational trades and business development to foster economic autonomy.
