The investigation into former PSOE activist Leire Díez has intensified, focusing on an alleged scheme to destabilize judicial proceedings affecting the PSOE and the family of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. In late July, Audiencia Nacional Judge Santiago Pedraz ordered the UCO to examine up to 80 bank accounts, including six belonging to the PSOE, to determine if they were used for money laundering or channeling funds related to the plot. By early August, the probe entered a new phase as Judge Arturo Zamarriego summoned an associate of Álvaro García Ortiz to clarify meetings held at the Spanish Prosecutor General's Office. Díez, who faces allegations of bribery and influence peddling alongside businessman Javier Pérez Dolsety and journalist Pere Rusiñol, has denied any “spurious purpose,” claiming her actions were part of a journalistic investigation. Her legal team has appealed several procedural decisions, including requests to access Civil Guard database logs. In mid-August, the investigation was officially transferred to the Audiencia Nacional to unify proceedings after Judge Pedraz accepted a request for inhibition. This transition follows an appeal by Prosecutor Ignacio Stampa, who was denied status as an aggrieved party. Stampa alleges he was the target of an attempted bribe involving Díez and Pérez Dolset, where professional and personal favors were allegedly offered in exchange for information regarding irregularities. The unified investigation now includes higher-ranking figures. Judge Zamarriego noted that while his initial focus was on Díez, Pérez Dolset, and Rusiñol, the Audiencia Nacional probe involves individuals such as former PSOE Secretary of Organization Santos Cerdán, who is alleged to have provided the “intellectual and financial impetus” for the scheme using party funds. Other figures under scrutiny include former government chief of staff Juan Manuel Serrano and former Andalusian official Gaspar Zarrías.
