China-Africa media cooperation forum

The 7th China-Africa Media Cooperation Forum was held in Beijing, involving representatives from approximately thirty to forty-five African nations. The discussions centered on digital transformation, audiovisual innovation, and the integration of artificial intelligence in media production.

A recurring theme among African delegates was the pursuit of information sovereignty and the ability to control continental narratives. Representatives from Niger, Burkina Faso, and Togo emphasized moving away from crisis-driven reporting toward content that showcases an ‘Africa that acts.’ To achieve this, officials called for cooperation that prioritizes technology transfer, professional training, and infrastructure modernization rather than just equipment provision.

During the forum, Togo’s Communication Minister, Yawa Ahofa Kouigan, reiterated the goal of producing content that highlights an ‘Africa that acts.’ Burkina Faso and São Tomé and Príncipe also identified capacity building, infrastructure modernization, and technological partnerships as essential pillars for their communication sectors. The discussions aimed to create integrated value chains in film, broadcasting, and digital content creation to foster mutual understanding and economic growth.

Regional cooperation also expanded through specific agreements, such as a memorandum of understanding signed in Kinshasa between media regulators from the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This agreement targets technical cooperation and a joint response to disinformation and hate speech on digital platforms.
