China cobra head bite incidents

In July 2026, a chef in Foshan, Guangdong died after a severed cobra head, placed in a trash bag while preparing snake soup, unexpectedly bit his hand and delivered a fatal dose of neurotoxic venom. Police noted the rarity of a head‑less cobra retaining a biting reflex.

A few weeks later, in August 2026, a 72‑year‑old fisherman on a riverbank in Zhejiang province was injured when the detached head of a king cobra he had struck lunged and bit his hand. The bite caused rapid swelling, necrosis and systemic symptoms, requiring emergency medical treatment and transfer to a larger hospital. Medical staff emphasized that even after decapitation, cobra heads can retain enough muscular control to deliver venomous bites, underscoring the danger of handling venomous snakes.

Both incidents illustrate a pattern of severe injuries—and in one case a death—caused by headless cobra bites in different regions of China, prompting renewed attention to the risks of handling venomous snakes even after they appear dead.
