China commercial satellite technology expansion

China is expanding its commercial and specialized space capabilities through a series of diverse satellite launches focused on advanced sensing and communication technologies.

In late August, the Diting constellation project began with the planned launch of three satellites utilizing space-based radio frequency (RF) sensing technology to monitor radio signals for maritime, public safety, and railway sectors. Additionally, the Dongfang Huiyan Hyperspectral 01 and 02 satellites were launched to enhance hyperspectral remote sensing capabilities.

By mid-September, developments progressed toward higher levels of onboard intelligence and integrated connectivity. GalaxySpace successfully deployed four PIESAT-2 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites featuring high-resolution payloads and real-time onboard processing. This was followed by the launch of the Peng Cheng First Star, which represents a domestic milestone in integrating “communication, sensing, intelligence, and computing” technologies. This mission utilized a 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) base station and onboard AI computing to transform satellites into multifunctional information nodes capable of processing data, such as fire detection, directly in orbit.
