China and Egypt have commenced the second edition of their joint air force exercise, ‘Eagles of Civilization 2026’. The drills, scheduled from mid-August through early September at various Egyptian air bases, involve a significant deployment of Chinese Shenyang J-16 multirole strike fighters. This marks the first time the J-16 model has been deployed to the African continent, supported by YY-20A aerial refueling tankers, KJ-500 airborne early warning aircraft, Y-20A transport planes, and Z-20 helicopters. A notable milestone occurred during the drills when a Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force YY-20 tanker successfully performed aerial refueling of an Egyptian Air Force Dassault Rafale, marking the first documented instance of a Chinese tanker transferring fuel to a Western-built fighter jet.
