China EV border lock continues

Entities: China · Zeekr 9X · Zeekr · Kazakhstan · Zeekr owner

Overview

The cross‑border protection system in Zeekr’s 9X electric SUV has triggered repeated lockouts after vehicles leave China. In mid‑July 2026 a Henan driver was immobilised for over 30 hours when the system disabled infotainment, navigation and the electronic fuel‑cap upon entering Kazakhstan. A second driver, Liu, experienced the same restriction after crossing on 16 July; Zeekr later restored functions remotely and issued an apology.

On 29 July a further incident was reported when a Zeekr 9X entered Kazakhstan and the system sealed the glove box, disabled the infotainment display and locked the fuel‑tank hatch, preventing refuelling for about 30 hours. The owner had requested a cross‑border activation code, but the lock engaged automatically. The episode went viral on Chinese social media, prompting another public apology from Zeekr.

Zeekr has pledged three remedial actions: an unlock‑code generator in its mobile app, a software update that disables the border lock by default for overseas travel, and a 24‑hour phone‑support line. The latest update will not affect models already sold for the European market. The recurring incidents have fueled debate in China over remote vehicle control and consumer‑rights protections, highlighting the challenges of cross‑border EV use under region‑specific software restrictions.
