China holiday safety inspections and mass travel movement

Overview

In late September 2026, Chinese government departments, including the Ministry of Emergency Management and the State Council Security Committee Office, initiated widespread safety inspections to prepare for the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays. Early efforts involved unannounced visits to key industries and high-risk sectors, with Beijing inspecting over 4,070 enterprises and Sichuan deploying nearly 5,000 inspectors to more than 14,200 sites.

As the National Day holiday approached, safety measures became more specialized across different regions. In Chongqing, public security bureaus focused on tourist attractions and commercial districts, while also expanding online administrative services to manage holiday crowds. Concurrently, maritime authorities in Tianjin implemented strict oversight of waterborne transport, specifically targeting fuel supply vessels through mandatory equipment inspections, personnel training verification, and emergency oil spill drills.

With the commencement of the National Day holiday, an estimated 2.13 billion people have begun traveling. Domestic transportation networks are facing significant surges; Chongqing Railway Station reported a record-breaking 424,000 passengers on the first day, representing a 15.4% increase from the previous year. In Guangdong, authorities anticipate daily highway traffic of approximately 10 million vehicles, while the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link has already experienced severe congestion.

To manage this demand, regional transit authorities have adjusted operations. The Tianjin Rail Transit Group has extended metro operating hours and increased train frequency. In Yantai, highway maintenance crews have been deployed in a ‘wartime state’ to ensure road safety and clear potential hazards. International travel trends show high demand for destinations such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Seoul, while Japanese cities have notably fallen out of the top 10 rankings.
