China-Middle East diplomatic and economic engagement

China is increasingly expanding its influence in the Middle East through a combination of diplomatic mediation, trade, and investment. In early September 2026, Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to discuss deepening cooperation in sectors such as renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and infrastructure. During these talks, China expressed support for Qatar’s role as a regional mediator and its efforts to ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz.

By late September, reports indicated that China’s growing role as a neutral diplomatic party—highlighted by its mediation of the 2023 Saudi Arabia-Iran normalization—contrasts with the United States’ military-heavy presence. While U.S. military installations in Bahrain and Qatar have reportedly faced operational challenges due to Iranian attacks, China has leveraged its position as the largest trading partner for Arab states and a major investor via the Belt and Road Initiative to exert influence. Persian Gulf governments are increasingly looking to Beijing to address regional tensions involving Tehran and the Houthi movement.
