China-Philippines diplomatic tension over immigration

Diplomatic tensions between China and the Philippines have escalated following the arrest of over 100 Filipino nationals by Chinese immigration authorities. China maintains these individuals were apprehended for “illegal employment” or “overstaying” during specialized operations across mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau.

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs is working to verify the status of those detained and has called for Chinese authorities to ensure due process and provide notification in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

The friction is linked to a May incident in Misamis Oriental, where Philippine authorities raided the Philippine Sanjia Steel Corporation, arresting 69 Chinese workers for lacking legal permits and seizing toxic chemicals and radioactive waste. Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has characterized the recent Chinese enforcement actions as “naked extortion and blackmail” in retaliation for those previous law enforcement actions. Conversely, the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that immigration authorities are performing legal duties without targeting specific nationalities.
