Overview

In late July 2026, China used the 99th anniversary of its People’s Liberation Army to stage a series of diplomatic ceremonies abroad, underscoring expanding defence partnerships. The first reported event was a reception in Ankara, Turkey, where Chinese ambassador Jiang Xuebin and Turkish defence officials highlighted a 55‑year diplomatic tie and growing military cooperation. Within the same week, similar commemorations were held at Chinese embassies in Quito, Ecuador, and Managua, Nicaragua. In Ecuador, Ambassador Sun Xiangyang and senior defence ministers emphasized the PLA’s modernisation and joint‑training programmes. Two days later in Nicaragua, Ambassador Qu Yuhui and local officials reiterated the PLA’s professional development and its role in regional peace, noting further defence collaboration. The outreach expanded on 29 July with a reception in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. Ambassador Ji Shumin, PLA attaché Senior Colonel Huang Lei and Turkmen Deputy Minister of Defence Begmurat Soltanov discussed existing contracts with Chinese firms such as NORINCO, CATIC and CETC and explored deeper military‑technical cooperation and education. On 30 July the celebrations moved to Rawalpindi, Pakistan, where the PLA’s anniversary was marked at the General Headquarters with Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong, Defence Attaché Major General Wang Zhong and Pakistan’s Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir praising the long‑standing partnership. A reception in Freetown, Sierra Leone, hosted by President Julius Maada Bio and Chinese Defence Attaché Senior Colonel Pu Lin highlighted the PLA’s confidence in safeguarding China’s sovereignty and its expanding security cooperation. In Beijing, President Xi Jinping led a Politburo collective study stressing absolute Party control over the military, anti‑corruption drives and the push for unmanned intelligent technology as part of the PLA’s modernisation. The anniversary was also commemorated at the Nanchang Uprising Museum, drawing thousands of visitors.
