China scientific and technological development forums
Overview
In October 2026, China hosted a series of major international scientific gatherings. The World Science and Technology Development Forum (WSTDF) opened in Chongqing on October 21, gathering approximately 800 experts to discuss the evolution of future industries. Discussions focused on the integration of robotics, automotive technology, and disease prevention. Wang Guangqian, President of the China Association for Science and Technology, emphasized linking scientific innovation with the economy, while Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, noted that engineering serves as a bridge between discovery and practice.
On October 24, the World Young Scientist Summit opened in Wenzhou. Hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology and other partners, the summit brought together nearly 800 representatives from over 60 countries. Under the theme “Gathering Talents Worldwide to Create a Better Future,” the event focused on “Global Youth Action in the AI Era: Building a Sustainable Future,” covering topics such as education reform, AI, and quantum computing. Notably, 88 percent of attendees were under the age of 45.
Scheduled to conclude the month’s activities, the World Top Scientists Forum is set to take place in Lingang, Shanghai, from October 30 to November 1. Organized by the China Association for Science and Technology, the forum centers on “Paradigm Shifts: The Next Decade of Scientific Breakthroughs,” covering sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, biomedicine, and quantum science. The event will also feature the fifth annual World Top Scientist Awards, honoring 11 scientists across categories including Life Sciences, Intelligent Science, and Young Scientist Awards.
