China university admission celebration debates

Social media discussions in China have highlighted the complexities and risks associated with large celebratory banquets held for students passing university entrance exams.

Initial reports focused on a specific family in Chongqing celebrating a daughter’s admission to Southwest University. The event, which included a large feast for the village, was marked by social tension when an elderly relative suggested that families without significant wealth should avoid hosting such large celebrations.

Subsequent reports expanded the scope of the debate to include broader social and legal risks. In Chongqing, references were made to a 2019 incident where a guest died from ethanol poisoning after being pressured to consume large amounts of liquor, leading to legal action against seven individuals. Additionally, a case in Heilongjiang province drew attention after a family booked 35 tables to celebrate a grandson’s admission to Wuhan University, but experienced very low attendance despite the grand scale of the event.
