Chinese hydrogen technology research developments
Overview
Researchers in China are advancing various hydrogen-based technologies. At the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, a 250-kilowatt system was developed to produce both hydrogen and fresh water from seawater simultaneously. By utilizing waste heat from an alkaline electrolyzer in a vacuum distillation tower, the system improves electrical efficiency by 14.4 percent compared to conventional methods and allows for the potential recovery of resources like salt and bromine.
Separately, researchers from Dongguan University of Technology and Sun Yat-sen University have proposed a hydrogen-powered heating system designed to operate independently of the electrical grid. This concept uses a hydrogen fuel cell to power a heat pump using carbon dioxide as a refrigerant. The design also includes a thermal energy storage component using hexadecane tubes, though the technology currently exists as a computer simulation rather than a physical prototype.
