Christian religious scripture readings

Religious readings focus on various accounts from the Gospels and moral teachings. Initial texts from the Gospel of Mark describe Jesus of Nazareth’s ministry in the Galilee region, including his authority to command spirits and the calling of his first disciples, such as Simon, Andrew, James, and John.

Subsequent readings include the Gospel of Luke, which recounts a miraculous catch of fish and Jesus’s instruction to Simon Peter. In the account of the events at the Lake of Gennesaret, Jesus instructs Simon to put out into deep water and lower his nets. Despite catching nothing during the night, Simon follows the command, resulting in a catch so large that the nets begin to tear and both boats nearly sink. Upon witnessing this miracle, Simon Peter expresses his unworthiness, to which Jesus responds by telling him ‘not to be afraid’ and declaring that he will henceforth be a ‘fisher of men.’ Following this event, Simon, James, and John leave everything to follow him.

Additional passages from Ezekiel and Romans emphasize the moral duty to act as a witness to truth and the importance of following one’s conscience.
