U.S. Representative Chuck Edwards (R-NC) has been formally censured by the House of Representatives in a 413-2 vote. The censure follows a House Ethics Committee investigation into a pattern of “persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct” toward two female staffers. The committee’s report documented that Edwards provided lavish gifts—including jewelry worth over $1,000, designer handbags, firearms, and travel expenses—and made frequent comments regarding the women’s appearances. While the investigation found no evidence of sexual propositions, quid pro quo harassment, or violations of federal law, the panel concluded his behavior created a hostile work environment that would reasonably be interpreted as sexual harassment. During the formal proceedings, Edwards was required to stand in the well of the House as Speaker Mike Johnson read the reprimand. Prior to the vote, Edwards issued a letter to his House colleagues requesting they reconsider the censure recommendation. He argued the committee made an “extraordinary analytical leap” by labeling his actions as sexual harassment, maintaining that his gifts, poetry, and compliments were merely expressions of “affectionate friendship.” Edwards, who has already withdrawn from his 2024 reelection campaign, continues to deny allegations of sexual misconduct.
