Civic protests and urban grievances in Romania

Overview

In early September 2026, various civic grievances emerged across several Romanian cities involving urban management and public services.

In Cluj-Napoca and Sibiu, residents reported significant disturbances caused by heavy vehicle traffic. In Cluj-Napoca, inhabitants in the Someșeni neighborhood noted increased speeds in low-speed zones and damage to property fences and water pipes. In Sibiu, residents of Strada Podului issued an open letter expressing concerns that vibrations from heavy tonnage trucks are causing cracks in buildings.

Simultaneously, other urban and social issues prompted public action. In Bucharest, a petition signed by over 10,000 people was launched to oppose funding cuts for free extracurricular activities in children’s clubs. In Brașov, more than 1,000 demonstrators gathered to protest a proposed underground parking lot project, demanding the preservation of green spaces and the revocation of local council land concession decisions.
