Classical music performances in Manaus

Overview

Classical music events are being held in Manaus, featuring both international repertoire and regional Amazonian influences.

The Orquestra Sinfônica da Amazônia (OSA) is conducting its ‘Série Amazônia’ at the Teatro ICBEU. Early performances under maestro Rubens Cláudio included works by Edvard Grieg alongside world premieres by composers from Pará, such as João Marcos Palheta and Cibelle Donza. Subsequent programming for the series includes Igor Stravinsky’s ‘Pulcinella Suite’ and Alexandre Caldi’s ‘Suíte Florestal’, which incorporates regional rhythms like carimbó and boi-bumbá.

Additionally, the Teatro Amazonas is hosting performances featuring Dutch pianist Nikola Meeuwsen, the 2025 winner of the Queen Elisabeth International Competition. Performing with the Amazonas Philharmonic Orchestra and the Amazonas Choir, Meeuwsen is scheduled to play Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor and Mozart’s cantata ‘Davide Penitente’.
