Extreme heat waves in Southern Italy and San Marino have prompted experts and local officials to call for structural changes to the academic calendar. The Società italiana di medicina ambientale (Sima) has advised delaying the start of classes in southern regions until the autumn equinox to protect health, noting that many classrooms suffer from poor ventilation and high CO2 levels. Sima has highlighted a significant infrastructure gap, warning that only 11% of Italian schools are equipped with air conditioning. To mitigate the heat, Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara announced a 20 million euro contribution for cooling devices, following the allocation of €3.7 billion in PNRR funds for energy efficiency. Critics and unions have labeled the cooling fund a temporary measure rather than a structural solution. In Sicily, regional education official Mimmo Turano rejected proposals to postpone the school year, citing legal requirements for a 206-day school year and fixed state exam schedules. While Minister Valditara clarified that individual regions retain authority over their own academic calendars, the Sicilian regional government has opted against a generalized postponement. Instead, the administration is granting autonomy to individual school boards to decide on start dates based on local conditions, provided they meet minimum teaching requirements. Local leaders have criticized these measures as insufficient. Maurizio Franzò, president of the National Association of Principals (ANP) in Sicily, argued that postponing classes is a “short-sighted measure” and called for structural energy regeneration, including photovoltaic systems and air conditioning. Additionally, Ottavio Zacco, president of the productive activities commission, advocated for a massive regional funding plan to ensure climate control and electrical upgrades to protect the health of students and staff. Expanding the debate, the Cisl Scuola Emilia Centrale union has called for institutional action as classroom temperatures reach between 32 and 36 degrees Celsius.
