Climate change impacts on Brazilian education

Overview

Climate-driven extreme weather events in Brazil are increasingly impacting the country’s educational landscape. In 2024, floods and droughts interrupted the education of approximately 1.17 million children and adolescents. To address these risks, the União Brasileira dos Estudantes Secundaristas (UBES) proposed the ‘Adapta+Escolas’ protocol, which focuses on resilient infrastructure, climate education, and community training to protect school environments from extreme temperatures and intense rainfall.

As extreme weather patterns persist, climate change and natural disasters have become central themes in major Brazilian academic entrance exams, including Enem, Fuvest, and Unicamp. Following a period of intense heatwaves and nearly 1,500 rain-related disasters, educators are using recent events, such as the 2024 Rio Grande do Sul floods, to test students on multidisciplinary scientific and social concepts.
