Climate change impacts on Polish agriculture
Overview
The Polish agricultural sector is facing significant structural and environmental challenges. A report titled ‘More Than a Profession: The Future of Agriculture in the Eyes of Practitioners’ notes that the number of farms in Poland has decreased by 200,000 over the last decade, raising concerns about food security and economic viability for younger generations. Key threats include rising production costs for fuel and fertilizer, water shortages, and climate change.
Recent data indicates a temperature increase of approximately 1.5 degrees Celsius over the last decade. This warming trend is forcing a shift in crop selection, with farmers moving toward drought-resistant varieties like sorghum, as well as increasing cultivation of corn, sunflowers, and peppers. To mitigate unpredictable weather, farmers are increasingly using artificial covers such as agrotextiles and hail nets.
Beyond physical farming, the environmental shift has prompted educational responses to address climate anxiety among youth through workshops focused on ecological education and mental resilience.
