Climate change impacts on Serua Island, Fiji

Overview

Residents of Serua Island in Fiji are resisting relocation efforts despite escalating environmental threats from rising sea levels and cyclones. While a 2025 report noted that approximately 20 percent of homes are in critical condition and only three houses are deemed strong enough to withstand a cyclone, many community members prefer to reinforce existing defenses and ancestral lands rather than move.

As regional sea levels rise at rates three to four times the global average, the community relies on a concrete sea wall and evacuation plans issued by the chief. The situation reflects broader trends in the South Pacific, where climate change is influencing infrastructure strategies and property decisions. Investors and residents are increasingly prioritizing elevation and climate resilience ratings to mitigate risks from flooding, erosion, and rising insurance premiums.
