Climate change research and recognition in Brazil
Overview
The Instituto Clima e Sociedade (iCS), in partnership with the Associação Nacional dos Centros de Pós-Graduação em Economia (Anpec), launched the iCS Economy and Climate Prize in Brazil. The initiative is designed to encourage scientific research into the economic impacts of global warming and climate change, specifically targeting doctoral-level researchers who published or presented work between May 2024 and May 2026.
Submissions for the prize, which offers awards ranging from R$ 5,000 to R$ 20,000, were scheduled to remain open until October 2. The program aims to generate technical data to assist public policy and long-term decision-making regarding extreme weather events affecting Brazil’s productive sectors and infrastructure.
In related climate science developments, climatologist Carlos Nobre was awarded the 2026 Thomas E. Lovejoy Prize for Leadership in Amazon Science and Conservation in New York.
